BEST BET
R5 No. 9 - Ti Tree Lad @ $4.20 (into $3.60 on race morning)
Ti Tree Lad wasn't given much hope last start and you'd want to see a fair bit more intent from John Allen here. He was taken straight back to last over 1200m on the Caulfield Heath and only got going very late in what was hopefully a nice 'prep run' for Warrnambool. Allen said he wants further and he gets that here second-up, stepping to 1400m from what should be a favourable gate in barrier three. There was plenty to like about the son of Thronum's debut at Swan Hill where he rattled off some slick closing sectionals to finish 3rd.
NEXT BEST
R1 No. 8 - Infringement @ $5.50 SCR
This Wilde-trained galloper was seriously awful as a $1.95 favourite last start when beaten over 11L. However, it was later reported that he had an elevated white blood cell count which likely had a negative impact on his performance. His first-up run prior was good and he was terrific storming home for 2nd over 1600m at Tauranga prior to joining the Wilde camp. He's drawn ideally in barrier five and looks open to sharp improvement off a forgive run.
R9 No. 8 - Armstrong Bay @ $7
Armstrong Bay has been rolled at short odds a number of times across his 13-start career, including a couple of 2nd-placings at this track at $1.70 and $1.65. Punters are getting a much better price here though off an unplaced effort at Terang where he really wasn't given much hope. If you put a line through that effort and go on his stylish win at Ararat two-back, he has to be considered among the leading contenders. This trip remains a query but fitness certainly won't be an excuse fourth-up.
R8 No. 16 - Is It Me @ $13 (into $8 on race morning)
Double-figure odds seem generous for Is It Me. The local gelding has been in the placings in 9 of his 11 starts and his last two runs over this trip read well: a dominant win in decent time at Caulfield, and a very close 2nd to Jungle Jim who was airborne at the time. The Bowman-trained galloper was forced to go back from barrier 13 at Bendigo last start but was strong late to grab 3rd. Daniel Moor should have him closer to the speed in this from barrier two and he won't know himself with 54kg after carrying 57kg, 60kg, 59.5kg and 59kg at his last four starts.
ROUGHIE
R3 No. 18 - First Return @ $71 (into $51 on race morning)
This race looks impossible so happy to have a pretty wild throw at the stumps on a horse paying upwards of $15 the place. The Walters-trained gelding trialled okay before his Mount Gambier debut, where he started at $9.50, but nothing went right for him there. He slipped soon after the gates opened and ended up settling in the last few over 903m. He never looked comfortable snookered back on the fence and the 7.8L margin makes the effort looks far worse than it was. This is a much, much deeper maiden but he could be a sharp improver provided he steps cleanly from barrier three with winkers going on.
